This qualification is designed to increase your knowledge and understanding of mental health and mental wellbeing, including the factors that influence mental health and how positive wellbeing can be promoted and maintained. You will explore the importance of recognising signs of mental ill health and developing the confidence to support individuals who may be experiencing difficulties.

You will also be supported to explore issues surrounding substance misuse and the criminal justice system, including how these areas can impact, and be impacted by, mental health challenges. The course will cover a range of mental health conditions, as well as the therapies, treatments, and support options available. This will help you develop a greater awareness of how to provide appropriate guidance, encourage early support, and contribute to a more supportive and understanding environment.

Course Information


To get the most from this course, Level 2 literacy is recommended. If you'd like to build your literacy skills first, there are development options available. You should be ready to work independently and complete assignments outside of class time.

You may find it helpful if you have already achieved a Level 2 Mental Health qualification, or qualifications in health care or social care contexts. Entry to this course is at the discretion of the college.


This is a knowledge-only qualification assessed through a portfolio of evidence, covering 5 units of work that is to be completed in your own time and requires some further reading.


Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care, or higher education in health and social care fields.
