What are industry placements?

Industry placements are a key part of every T Level, giving students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a real working environment. During their placement, students apply the knowledge and skills they have developed in the classroom while building confidence and essential workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving and professionalism.

Placements typically last between 45 and 315 hours (approximately five to 45 days), offering employers a flexible way to support emerging talent while benefiting from enthusiastic, motivated students who are ready to make a positive contribution.

Available across a wide range of sectors, including digital, construction, engineering, health and many more, industry placements help employers develop future talent, bring fresh perspectives into their organisation and play an active role in shaping the workforce of tomorrow.

Industry placement FAQs

Who can offer industry placements?

Any employer in England can offer a T Level industry placement, provided it takes place in a genuine workplace environment. Whether you're a small business or a large organisation, placements can be offered across a wide range of sectors, giving students the opportunity to develop valuable technical skills and gain real-world experience.

Can employers choose their students?

Employers can specify the skills, qualities, or experience they are looking for in a student. Students can apply directly for placements, and a brief interview or CV review may be used to help identify the best fit. East Coast College will support the matching process, helping you connect with a student whose skills, interests, and aspirations aligns with your business needs.

Do businesses need to pay the students?

There is no legal requirement to pay students undertaking a T Level industry placement, as it is a compulsory part of their course. However, employers are welcome to offer payment or contribute towards travel and meal expenses if they choose. The main objective is to provide a high-quality, meaningful learning experience that supports the student's development while also bringing value to your business.

What are businesses expected to provide on a placement?

Employers are asked to provide:

A safe and supportive work environment.
Meaningful tasks that help students develop practical and technical skills.
A line manager or mentor to supervise and guide the student.
A formal induction, including relevant policies and procedures.
Feedback at the end of the placement to help students reflect on their learning.

Am I expected to employ the student at the end of the placement?

No. There is no requirement to offer ongoing employment following a placement. However, many employers see placements as an opportunity to identify future talent and create a pipeline for apprenticeships, entry-level roles, or long-term employment.

Do I need current employers liability insurance?

Yes. All employers offering placements will need current employers liability insurance.
