What are Foundation Learning Courses?

Foundation Learning provides a supportive college experience for young people who may need extra help developing their skills, confidence and independence before progressing into further education, training, employment or adult life. At East Coast College, programmes are designed around individual needs and can include learning in areas such as English and maths, independent living, employability skills, communication, work experience and personal development.

Foundation Learning courses offer a personalised approach, helping students build on their strengths while developing practical skills for everyday life and the workplace. Learners receive support in a friendly environment, with opportunities to take part in enrichment activities, volunteering, community involvement and progression pathways suited to their goals.

Foundation Learning

Foundation Learning is designed for students who may need additional support with learning, confidence, independence or preparation for their next steps. It is particularly suitable for learners with learning difficulties and disabilities (SEND) or those who have previously received additional support at school.

Students can develop a range of skills, including English and maths, communication, independence, problem-solving, employability skills and workplace preparation. Courses may also include work experience, volunteering and enrichment activities.

After completing a Foundation Learning programme, students may progress into further education courses, supported internships, employment, volunteering opportunities or other pathways that match their abilities and ambitions.

Many Foundation Learning programmes at East Coast College are offered as one-year, full-time courses, although the exact structure depends on the specific programme and the learner’s needs.
