How can an apprentice benefit my business?

An apprenticeship combines paid employment with high-quality training, enabling individuals to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to succeed in their role while earning a wage.

As an employer, you'll benefit from a motivated member of staff who learns on the job while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. Whether you're looking to upskill an existing employee or recruit new talent, East Coast College can support you every step of the way.

Who can become an apprentice?

To be eligible for an apprenticeship, the apprentice must:

  • Be aged 16 or over (there is no upper age limit)
  • Live in England
  • Not already be in full-time education

Finding the right apprentice

Whether you're investing in your current workforce or recruiting someone new, we can help.

Apprenticeships are an excellent way to develop your current workforce.

If an employee is taking on a new role or needs to gain new knowledge, skills and behaviours, an apprenticeship provides a structured pathway for professional development while supporting career progression.

How apprentices learn

Apprentices develop through a combination of workplace experience and structured training.

As the employer, you'll provide day-to-day supervision, practical experience and opportunities for the apprentice to develop their skills within your business.

Your responsibilities as an employer

As an employer, you will be expected to:

  • Employ the apprentice in a genuine job with a contract of employment
  • Pay the apprentice's wages, including the time they spend completing off-the-job training
  • Provide appropriate supervision, mentoring and workplace training
  • Sign an Apprenticeship Agreement outlining the length of the apprenticeship, off-the-job training requirements and place of work
  • Agree to a Training Plan that includes the programme dates, off-the-job training arrangements and the apprentice's individual learning plan
