The Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) in Nautical Science is designed to develop the professional knowledge, practical skills, and academic understanding required for a successful career as a Deck Officer in the Merchant Navy. The programme explores the relationship between the marine environment, human factors, and modern maritime technology, preparing you to operate safely and effectively in today's maritime industry.
The primary aim of the course is to develop your competence to the standard required to perform the duties of an Officer of the Watch (OOW) and meet the requirements for certification as a Deck Officer.

- Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) in Nautical Science (awarded by the University of West London)
- MCA Digital Assessment Platform - Navigation and Stability Safety Papers examination fee (first attempt only)
- GMDSS General Operator's Certificate (GOC) training and examination fee (first attempt only)
- Efficient Deck Hand (EDH)
- Human Element Leadership and Management - Operational Level (HELM O)
- Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training - Operational Level (NAEST O)
- Signals Examination
Course Structure
The programme offers three intakes each year in September, January, and May.
Your training begins with 21 weeks of CertHE Nautical Science tuition, followed by the CertHE examinations and a series of mandatory short courses. The complete programme is normally delivered over 12 months. Individual training plans are prepared to take account of your visa expiry date and any genuine special circumstances where possible.
