Please note, this course is only accepting applications from learners aged 16 - 18, as well as those up to the age of 25 who hold a current EHCP.

Our Painting and Decorating course is designed for aspiring decorators who want to develop the practical skills, technical knowledge and industry experience needed for a successful career within the construction and decorating sectors. Combining hands-on training with industry insight, this course provides the opportunity to develop the confidence and expertise required to progress into employment or further study.

Throughout the course, you will develop your practical abilities in our well-equipped, professionally maintained workshops, completing industry-relevant tasks and projects designed to build your skills. You will gain experience in essential decorating techniques, including surface preparation, paint application using brush and roller methods, wallpapering, decorative finishes and colour theory. You will also explore spraying techniques and develop an understanding of the health and safety practices required when working in the industry.

As your studies progress, you will broaden your knowledge of the wider construction environment by exploring key building principles and developing an understanding of how decorating fits within the wider trade sector. Work experience is strongly encouraged, giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in a professional setting, gain valuable industry insight and build confidence in the workplace.

Course Information


Year 1: Three GCSEs at grade 2 or above, including English and Maths. Year 2: You will need to have completed Year 1.


Assessment takes place through practical workshop tasks, written assignments, online tests and portfolio evidence.


On successful completion of the course, you will have developed the practical skills, technical knowledge and industry awareness needed to progress into employment within the painting and decorating sector. You may also choose to continue your studies through higher-level construction and decorating qualifications, apprenticeships or specialist training to further develop your skills. The experience gained throughout the course, including work experience opportunities and employer engagement activities, will help you build the confidence and professional skills required for a successful career in the industry.


Throughout the course, you will study a range of practical and theoretical topics designed to develop your skills as a professional decorator. Modules will cover essential areas including preparing surfaces for decoration, applying paint finishes using brush and roller techniques, wallpapering, decorative effects, colour theory, and an introduction to spray application methods. You will also develop your understanding of construction principles, industry standards, materials, tools and equipment, as well as the importance of health and safety practices when working in a professional environment.
