Engineering Maintenance Technicians: They're the specialists who keep critical equipment running smoothly by diagnosing faults, fixing problems, and preventing breakdowns before they happen.

Engineering maintenance technicians work in a range of industries that use plant equipment and systems. This includes energy, leisure entertainment, manufacturing, processing, and utility companies.

They maintain the safe and reliable operation of plant equipment and systems, complying with industry specific regulations, as safety is a key priority. They must comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations and procedures, and sustainability practices. They conduct planned and preventative maintenance to prevent issues occurring and reactive maintenance when problems occur.

East Coast College offer the following pathways as part of this standard:

  • Electrical Engineering Maintenance Technician - Focusing on electrical aspects of plant, equipment and systems such as motors, single-phase and three-phase, power supplies, and low/high voltage electrical distribution.
  • Mechanical Engineering Maintenance Technician - Focusing on mechanical aspects of plant, equipment and systems such as actuators, fans, pumps, valves, gearboxes, and pipework.

GCSE grade 4 or Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths

If you do not possess these grades, you will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End Point Assessment.

Course Content:

  • Engineering Maintenance Context: Covers sectors, maintenance disciplines, technician responsibilities, business considerations (quality, cost, delivery), planning and equipment lifecycle, and a full range of maintenance strategies (PPM, CBM, TPM, run-to-failure, etc.).
  • Health, Safety, Security & Environment: Includes extensive H&S regulations (HASAWA, COSHH, RIDDOR, DSEAR, LOLER, etc.), risk assessments, safe systems of work, PPE, asset security, environmental compliance (EMS, Hazardous Waste, EPA), sustainability principles, net zero, emergency procedures, recycling, and waste management.
  • Engineering Knowledge & Standards: Encompasses mathematical methods, materials properties, engineering drawings, British/International standards (BSI/ISO), quality systems, SOPs, documentation control, foreign material exclusion, CI systems, teamworking, EDI, communication (verbal/written), IT systems, GDPR, cyber security, and Industry 4.0 technologies.
  • Electrical, Mechanical & Control/Instrumentation Theory: Detailed principles across all disciplines including electrical laws, circuits, wiring regulations, fault-finding, diagrams, cables, plant maintenance; mechanical systems, hydraulics/pneumatics, mechanical calculations, diagrams, fasteners, maintenance; and C&I control systems, sensors, PLCs, SCADA, P&IDs, PID controllers, calibration and diagnostics.
  • Practical Skills Across Disciplines: Ability to plan work, manage resources, assess hazards, apply safety procedures, communicate effectively, record/document work, use diagnostic tools, perform isolation/deisolation, inspect, test, adjust, replace, clean, lubricate, align equipment, and apply discipline-specific maintenance and fault-finding techniques (electrical, mechanical, C&I).
  • Professional Behaviours: Focus on safety, sustainability, accountability for work quality, effective teamwork with inclusivity, and commitment to continuous professional development.
