This course is designed to develop your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Achieving a GCSE English grade C or Level 4 and above is valued by employers and can support your progression into further study and employment.

You will develop skills in:

Reading

Understanding fiction and non-fiction texts
Identifying language techniques and their effects
Exploring how language is used in different contexts

Writing

Creating texts for different purposes and audiences
Developing essay-writing skills
Improving spelling, punctuation, and grammar

Speaking and Listening

Delivering presentations
Responding to questions and feedback
Using Standard English confidently

The course will also help you improve workplace communication skills, including writing CVs, covering letters, and adapting your language for different audiences.

Course Information

Entry requirements

A D-grade/Level 3 in English Language or a Level 1 in Functional English. If your prior attainment is lower than this you will study Functional English to prepare you for GCSE English.

Assessment

There are two written exams in June to assess your skills in: Exploration in Creative Reading and Writing, and Writers' Viewpoint and Perspectives. The papers contain a mix of short, longer form and extended questions.

Progression

Achieving a GCSE in English can open up a wide range of opportunities for your future. With a suitable Level 3 qualification, it can support progression to university, A Levels, or further Level 3 courses in practical and academic subjects. A GCSE in English will also improve your employability by helping you develop the communication and writing skills needed for applications, assignments, and the workplace. It can increase your confidence when applying for jobs and improve your chances of securing an apprenticeship or traineeship.

Modules

The GCSE English course is made up of a range of modules designed to develop your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. You will explore a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts, develop your ability to analyse language and meaning, and improve your writing for different purposes and audiences.
