Functional Maths focuses on developing practical mathematical skills that can be applied to real-life situations, both in everyday life and the workplace. Achieving a Functional Maths qualification is a valuable addition to your CV and can support your progression towards achieving a GCSE Maths grade C or Level 4.

Throughout the course, you will learn how to apply number and problem-solving skills to personal, academic, and vocational situations. You will build confidence in using numbers, develop your ability to interpret and solve practical problems, and apply mathematical knowledge to a range of different contexts.

Course Information


If you have previously achieved any grade below a D/Grade 3 in GCSE Maths, you may be eligible to complete Functional Skills Maths. The most appropriate level for you will be based on your initial assessment scores.


All assessment is on demand and designed to be taken as soon as a learner is ready.

At all levels there is just a single assessment/exam. At Level 1 you can take the assessment either online or on paper. The Entry level assessments are on paper and there is a choice of topics.


You can move on to the next level which may be GCSE Maths. Achieving certain levels in Functional Maths will also help you to gain access to higher level courses.


The Functional Maths course is structured into a series of modules that develop essential mathematical skills for everyday life, further study, and the workplace. Each module focuses on applying maths in practical contexts, including working with numbers, calculations, measures, data, and problem-solving. Learners will build confidence in using mathematical methods, interpreting information, and making informed decisions in a variety of real-life and vocational situations. The modules are designed to support progression, improve numeracy skills, and help learners achieve their qualification goals.
