This course provides you with a comprehensive understanding of dementia care principles. It is designed to support those working in or aspiring to work in health and social care roles that involve supporting individuals with dementia.

You will explore the types, causes, and effects of dementia, and gain insight into the importance of early diagnosis. The course emphasises person-centred approaches and how they underpin effective care and support for individuals with dementia.

Communication and interaction strategies are covered in depth, helping learners understand how to engage positively with individuals affected by dementia. The course also highlights the importance of activity, occupation, and identity in promoting wellbeing.

Equality, diversity, and inclusion are key themes, ensuring learners understand how to challenge discrimination and oppressive practices. The course also addresses nutritional needs and how to support individuals during mealtimes.

Course Information

To get the most from this course, Level 2 literacy is recommended. If you'd like to build your literacy skills first, there are development options available. You should be ready to work independently and complete assignments outside of class time.

This is a knowledge-only qualification assessed through a portfolio of evidence, covering 7 units of work that is to be completed in your own time and requires some further research.

This qualification supports progression to Level 4 Health and Social Care qualifications and employment in dementia care roles. You may also choose to advance to higher education.
