Access to Humanities and Social Sciences is an exciting course designed to prepare you for a broad range of university degrees. It builds on your existing experience and abilities while developing your academic and critical thinking skills, preparing you for the challenges of higher education and other forms of advanced study or training.

In addition to the formal lessons, individual tutorials and careers advice sessions are held with you throughout the course.

This course provides access to a wide variety of degree pathways, apprenticeships and advanced study opportunities, including the subjects listed above and related fields such as law and criminology.

Course Information

A sufficient standard of Numeracy and English Language is required to cope with the demands of the course. You will need to have GCSEs in English Language and/or Mathematics at grade 4 or grade C (or above), as the majority of university providers will require this. Equivalents (such as Functional Skills Level 2) may also be considered, depending on the progression route you are working towards.

All students will undertake a diagnostic assessment to check these skills during the course interview or induction process and you will be required to demonstrate that you can work at level 2 in these subject areas. Students may be able to study for one GCSE, in either English Language or Mathematics, alongside the Access course. This will be discussed during the Access interview process.

Assessment methods are varied on the course and mirror assessment methods that are likely to be experienced on most university degree programmes. Assessments take the form of essays, presentations, case studies, research project and written examinations. Additionally, assessment for the study skills units is a portfolio of evidence which is compiled throughout the year. Assessments are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction, with the exception of study skills units which are ungraded.

Progression routes include a wide range of humanities degrees or related fields such as law and criminology. We also have students progress to apprenticeships and other advanced study routes.
