Access to Counselling is an exciting course which will develop your understanding of counselling theory, human behaviour and the skills required to support others. It will build on your existing knowledge and experiences while helping you to develop effective active listening skills, self-awareness and personal growth. The course will prepare you for progression to higher levels of study, including university courses such as BA (Hons) Person-Centred Counselling, or other related programmes at the same level.

You will also develop a range of transferable skills that are valuable for further study and future employment, including communication, reflection, critical thinking and the ability to understand different perspectives. These skills will support you in both your academic journey and personal development.

In addition to the formal lessons, individual tutorials, guidance and support sessions will be available throughout the course to help you reflect on your progress, develop your academic skills and plan your next steps.

Work experience or volunteering in a relevant setting is highly recommended as part of the programme, although it is not compulsory or assessed. Gaining experience in areas such as health, wellbeing, education or support work can enhance your understanding of counselling practice and strengthen applications for further study or related career pathways. More details will be discussed during the interview process.

Course Information

A sufficient standard of Numeracy and English Language is needed to cope with the demands of the course. We strongly advise you to have a GCSE in English language and maths at grade C or above as the majority of university providers will require this. All students will undertake diagnostic assessment to assess these skills during the course interview or induction process and you will be required to demonstrate that you can work at level 2 in these subject areas. Students may be able to study for one GCSE in either English Language or maths alongside the Access course. This will be discussed during the Access interview process.

Assessment methods are varied on the course and mirror assessment methods that are likely to be experienced on most university degree programmes. Assessments take the form of essays, presentations, case studies, research project and written examinations. Additionally, assessment for the study skills units is a portfolio of evidence which is compiled throughout the year. Assessments are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction, with the exception of study skills units which are ungraded.
