Overview

Our Painting and Decorating course is designed to help learners develop the practical skills and industry knowledge needed to begin a career in the decorating trade. Delivered at our Lowestoft Campus, the course combines hands-on workshop training with classroom learning, covering essential techniques such as surface preparation, brush and roller painting, wallpapering, decorative effects, colour selection, spraying methods, and safe working practices. Students are taught by industry-qualified decorators and work towards an industry-recognised qualification.

Throughout the course, learners have opportunities to build confidence through practical assessments and work experience, gaining valuable insight into the construction and decorating industry. The programme supports progression into employment, apprenticeships, or further training, with potential career pathways including painter and decorator, site supervisor, self-employed decorator, heritage worker, and other construction-related roles.

Painting & Decorating FAQs


You will learn a range of practical decorating skills, including preparing surfaces, applying paint using brushes and rollers, wallpapering, creating decorative finishes, colour techniques, spraying, and following health and safety procedures.


The course is delivered at East Coast College’s Lowestoft Campus and typically takes between one and two years to complete, depending on the level of study.


Assessment is mainly carried out through practical workshop tasks, allowing students to demonstrate their decorating skills and understanding of industry techniques.


After completing the course, learners can move into employment, an apprenticeship, or further study. Career opportunities may include working as a painter and decorator, site operative, site supervisor, self-employed decorator, technician, teacher, or heritage worker.


Students will need to wear suitable practical clothing and footwear for workshop activities. A course-specific uniform may be required to help maintain professional standards and ensure safety while carrying out decorating tasks. Details of any required uniform, personal protective equipment (PPE), and where to obtain them will be provided by the college.
