English & Maths FAQs
These courses are ideal for adults who want to gain or improve their GCSE Maths or English qualification to support career progression, university applications, apprenticeships or further education.
Functional Skills qualifications focus on practical English and Maths skills used in everyday life and the workplace, while GCSEs provide a broader academic qualification. If you don't yet meet the entry requirements for a GCSE course, studying a Functional Skills qualification can be a great stepping stone before progressing to GCSE level.
Applicants typically need a Grade D/Level 3 GCSE or a Level 1 Functional Skills qualification in the relevant subject. If your current qualification is below this level, you may first study Functional Skills before progressing to GCSE.
GCSE Maths is assessed through three written examinations, while GCSE English Language includes two written exams and a spoken language assessment.
The courses are free for eligible adult learners, subject to individual circumstances. The college admissions team can advise on eligibility.
Achieving GCSE Maths or English can help you progress to Level 3 courses, apprenticeships, A Levels, university and improve your employment opportunities.
